Danish Spitz

The Danish Spitz is a small white farm spitz of Denmark, recognised nationally only in 2019 after a long fight over whether it existed.

History

Small white spitz dogs were kept on Danish farms as watchdogs and companions for centuries. Danish cynologists spent years assembling evidence that this was a distinct native type rather than an assortment of imported spitz, and the Danish Kennel Club recognised it in 2019 — which makes it one of the newest nationally recognised breeds in Europe and one of the oldest dogs in the country.

Temperament

The breed is known for being alert, cheerful and attached to its household, quick to announce arrivals and friendly once introduced.

Care and training

Exercise needs are moderate. The white double coat sheds seasonally and needs regular brushing. The barking wants shaping early.

Health

Generally healthy; a small recognised population is the standing caution. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
