Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a Mexican toy breed and the smallest recognised dog in the world, kept almost entirely as a companion and known for a compact body, large erect ears and a rounded skull.

History

It traces to Mexico and is named after the state of Chihuahua, with likely roots in small companion dogs of the region. It comes in short- and long-coated varieties across a wide range of colours.

Temperament

The breed is known for an outsized character — bold, alert and devoted, often bonding closely to one person. That confidence needs early socialising, or a small dog decides it must run the house.

Care and training

Exercise needs are modest and easily met with short walks and play, but training and socialisation matter as much here as in any large breed. In cold weather a tiny short-coated dog genuinely needs a layer.

Health
