Bullmastiff

The Bullmastiff is a British guardian breed — a large, powerful dog bred to be quiet, fast and imposing without being savage.

History

It was developed in nineteenth-century England by gamekeepers, who crossed the Mastiff with the Bulldog to make a "gamekeeper's night dog" that could track poachers in the dark and pin them without mauling. That guarding purpose shaped its build and its temperament.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, confident and devoted, reserved with strangers but gentle with its family. Its size and protectiveness make early socialising and steady handling essential.

Care and training

It needs moderate daily exercise and firm, reward-based training suited to a strong dog. The short coat is easy, but the flat-ish face means heat should be managed with care.

Health
