Bulgarian Scenthound
The Bulgarian Scenthound — Gonche — is Bulgaria's smooth-coated tracking hound, and the country's main hunting dog.
History
It has worked hare and fox across Bulgaria for centuries, hunted singly or in small groups rather than in large packs, and it is bred by Bulgarian hunting associations on working ability. It is distinct from the rough-coated Barak, though the two share ground and quarry.
Temperament
The breed is known for being lively, enduring and persistent, sociable with people and dogs and vocal once it has a line.
Care and training
It needs a great deal of exercise and secure ground; recall competes with the nose. The short coat is easy and the drop ears want checking.
Health
Generally robust from working selection, with ear infections the usual complaint. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
