Treeing Cur

The Treeing Cur is an American working type defined by a behaviour rather than an appearance — it drives game up a tree and holds it there, barking, until the hunter arrives.

History

Curs were the general-purpose dogs of the American frontier, and the treeing types were kept and bred by hunters across the south and midwest for squirrel, raccoon and larger game. Registries recognise the type on working ability, which is why the dogs vary considerably in size and colour.

Temperament

The breed is known for being courageous, alert and attached to its handler, sociable enough at home and completely absorbed by work in the field.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and a genuine outlet for the treeing instinct. It is not suited to a household with no job to offer. The short coat needs little.

Health

Generally robust from working selection, with nothing widely documented as specific to the type. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
