Standard Schnauzer

The Standard Schnauzer is the original of the three schnauzer breeds — a medium German farm dog with a wiry coat, sharp mind and a bearded, eyebrowed face.

History

It is the oldest schnauzer, kept on German farms as a ratter, drover and yard guard, and prized as an all-round working dog long before the giant and miniature versions were developed from it. Function shaped its hardy build and quick wits.

Temperament

The breed is known for being spirited, intelligent and loyal, an alert watchdog and a playful, affectionate family dog. It is lively and clever, and wants to be involved in what its people are doing.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise and mental work and takes eagerly to training, though its cleverness can tip into wilfulness. The wiry coat needs regular clipping or hand-stripping and beard cleaning.

Health
