Sporting Lucas Terrier

The Sporting Lucas Terrier is a British working terrier bred back from the Lucas Terrier towards the field.

History

The Lucas Terrier, made by Sir Jocelyn Lucas from Sealyham and Norfolk stock, drifted towards companionship over the decades. Brian Plummer and others crossed working terriers back into it from the 1980s to restore the ability to go to ground, and the result was registered separately as the Sporting Lucas. It is kept by working associations rather than kennel clubs.

Temperament

The breed is known for being game, sociable in a pack and affectionate at home — the Lucas's tolerance of other dogs kept, with the working drive put back.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise and a secure garden. The harsh coat needs hand-stripping. Training benefits from a job.

Health

Generally robust; a small working population is the standing caution. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
