Selkirk Rex

The Selkirk Rex is a plush, curly-coated cat — sometimes called the "cat in sheep's clothing" — whose soft waves come from a natural dominant mutation.

History

It began with a single curly-coated kitten found in a shelter in Montana in 1987, and was developed by breeding on that dominant curl, which affects even the whiskers. Both short and long-haired versions exist, and unlike some rex breeds it keeps a full, dense coat.

Temperament

The breed is known for being patient, tolerant and affectionate — a laid-back, cuddly cat that is playful without being demanding and content in a family home. It is gentle, easygoing company.

Care

The curly coat needs gentle grooming rather than heavy brushing, which can straighten the curl, and its density means occasional bathing helps. It is otherwise an easy cat to keep.

Health

Because it was developed using Persians, British and Exotic Shorthairs, it can inherit their concerns — polycystic kidney disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and hip dysplasia — for which breeders test; the curl gene itself is not tied to health problems.
