Norrbottenspets

The Norrbottenspets is a small Nordic hunting spitz from the far north of Sweden and Finland — a bark-pointer that holds game in a tree and tells the hunter where it is.

History

It hunted capercaillie and other forest game across northern Scandinavia for centuries. The breed was declared extinct in the 1940s, then found still working on remote farms in Norrbotten and Finland, and the modern population comes from those survivors.

Temperament

The breed is known for being lively, confident and affectionate, a small dog with an outsized voice and real independence in the field. It is friendly at home and attentive rather than clingy.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise and something to hunt or search for. Barking is part of the working method and needs shaping rather than suppressing. The double coat sheds seasonally and needs only regular brushing.
