Norfolk Terrier
The Norfolk Terrier is one of the smallest working terriers — identical to the Norwich Terrier except that its ears drop rather than stand, which is what separated the two breeds.
History
It was worked in East Anglia against rats and to bolt foxes, kept in packs by hunts as well as by households. Drop-eared and prick-eared dogs were one breed until 1964, when British registries divided them; the ear is the whole distinction.
Temperament
The breed is known for being cheerful, gregarious and less quarrelsome than most terriers — pack work selected for dogs that tolerate each other. It is bold for its size and keeps a strong instinct to chase and dig.
Care and training
It needs regular exercise and a secure garden. The harsh wiry coat should be hand-stripped rather than clipped, and needs regular brushing. It trains well for a terrier and enjoys company.
Health
Known tendencies include mitral valve heart disease, patellar luxation and, in some lines, a breathing condition breeders monitor. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
