Kangal Shepherd Dog

The Kangal is a large Turkish livestock guardian — a calm, powerful dog bred to live with the flock and turn back wolves and bears, and a national symbol of Turkey.

History

It comes from the Kangal district of Sivas in central Turkey, where for generations it has guarded sheep on the open range, working on its own judgement far from the shepherd. Guarding by presence and courage, not by herding, is its whole purpose.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, independent and deeply protective — gentle and steady with its family and flock, and formidable toward a genuine threat. That guarding instinct and independence make it a working dog first, not a casual pet.

Care and training

It needs space, moderate exercise and secure boundaries, along with early socialising and an experienced owner who respects its independent nature. The short dense double coat sheds seasonally and needs little grooming.

Health
