Cymric

The Cymric is the long-haired Manx — a tailless cat from the Isle of Man, carrying the same mutation under a longer coat.

History

Tailless cats have been recorded on the Isle of Man for centuries, the island's isolation letting a single dominant mutation spread through the local population. The long-haired form was developed as a separate breed in Canada, and the Welsh name was chosen for it rather than inherited.

Temperament

The breed is known for being placid, sociable and dog-like in its attachment, often following its people about and taking an interest in whatever they are doing. The powerful hind legs make it a notable jumper.

Care

The double coat needs regular brushing, particularly through a moult, and the area a tail would normally shield can want checking. Otherwise this is an easygoing cat that suits a family household.

Health

The taillessness is the health story: the gene that removes the tail also affects the spine, and in its severe form causes the defects known as Manx syndrome, which is why two tailless cats are not bred together.
