Carolina Dog

The Carolina Dog is a primitive-type dog found living wild in the American south-east — a free-ranging population that turned out to be old rather than feral.

History

It was identified in the 1970s in the swamps and forests of South Carolina and Georgia, where dogs of a consistent pariah type had been living independently of people. Genetic work has since linked it to the dogs that accompanied the first human migrations into the Americas, which makes it less a breed than a surviving landrace.

Temperament

The breed is known for being wary, resourceful and pack-oriented, deeply attached to its own group and cautious with strangers. It keeps behaviours rarely seen in modern breeds, including digging snout pits and a strong seasonal cycle.

Care and training

It needs space, secure fencing and an owner who works with its caution rather than against it. Socialising early matters more than obedience drilling. The short coat is easy and it is naturally clean.

Health

Shaped by natural selection rather than by a standard, it is generally robust; some individuals show sensitivity to common parasite treatments. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
