Boston Terrier

The Boston Terrier is a small American companion breed with a smooth tuxedo-marked coat and erect ears — the "American Gentleman".

History

It was developed in Boston in the late nineteenth century from bull-and-terrier crosses, bred down from fighting stock into an even-tempered companion, and recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1893 as one of the first breeds made in the United States.

Temperament

The breed is known for being friendly, lively and even-tempered, a people-oriented dog that suits families and city flats alike. It is playful without being demanding and generally good with children.

Care and training

Exercise needs are modest, met with walks and play, and the short coat is easy to keep. It trains readily but can show a stubborn streak that rewards patience and food.

Health

The flat face brings breathing concerns and prominent eyes prone to injury, along with heat sensitivity and, in some dogs, patellar luxation. These are known patterns for the breed and a matter for the individual dog and its vet; the measured facts are in the panel.
