Bohemian Spotted Dog

The Bohemian Spotted Dog — Český strakatý pes — was bred for laboratory work, which is an origin almost no other breed has.

History

František Horák — the same Czech geneticist who made the Cesky Terrier — created it in the 1950s at the Institute of Physiology in Prague, where he needed dogs of predictable size, temperament and coat for neurophysiological research. He documented the breeding as carefully as he documented the terrier. It later passed into ordinary hands as a companion, and Czech clubs maintain it.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, even-tempered and easy to handle — the traits it was selected for — friendly with people and undemanding at home.

Care and training

Exercise needs are moderate. The short coat needs almost nothing. It trains readily; placidity was the point of it.

Health

Generally healthy, with a small closed population as the standing caution. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
