Bearded Collie

The Bearded Collie — the Beardie — is a Scottish herding breed under a long, shaggy coat, lively and exuberant by nature.

History

It was worked for centuries in Scotland as a drover's and shepherd's dog, moving sheep and cattle across rough country in all weathers, the long coat its protection. It was a working hill dog long before it became a show and companion breed.

Temperament

The breed is known for being bouncy, energetic and friendly — an enthusiastic, sometimes boisterous dog that stays playful for years and bonds warmly with its family. It is bright and can be vocal.

Care and training

It needs plenty of exercise and mental work, and the long double coat is a real commitment, needing frequent brushing to stay free of mats. It responds well to positive training, though its exuberance calls for patience.

Health

Known tendencies include hip dysplasia, autoimmune conditions such as Addison's disease and hypothyroidism, and inherited eye problems. These are patterns for the breed rather than a verdict on one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
