Basenji

The Basenji is an ancient hunting dog from Central Africa, best known for not barking — it makes a yodel-like sound instead — and for a fastidious, cat-like nature.

History

It was kept by peoples of the Congo basin to flush and drive game into nets, valued for its speed, silence and keen sight and scent. It is one of the oldest and most primitive domestic breeds, and females typically come into season only once a year rather than twice.

Temperament

The breed is known for being alert, curious and independent, grooming itself like a cat and forming strong bonds while remaining aloof and strong-willed. Its intelligence runs alongside a stubborn streak that makes it a poor fit for anyone wanting an obedient dog.

Care and training

It needs plenty of exercise and mental work, secure fencing against a keen prey drive and talent for escape, and patient, reward-based training. The short coat is easy to keep.

Health

Known tendencies include an inherited kidney disorder, an inherited anaemia and progressive retinal atrophy, for which DNA tests exist. These are patterns for the breed rather than a verdict on one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
