Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog

The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog is a naturally bob-tailed cattle dog from Australia — an older and distinct breed from the Australian Cattle Dog, not a variety of it.

History

It developed in nineteenth-century Australia from crosses between British droving dogs and the dingo, to move cattle over long distances in heat that killed imported breeds. The short tail is a natural mutation carried in the breed, and Australian registries record it separately from its better-known relative.

Temperament

The breed is known for being alert, hard-working and independent, loyal to its handler and reserved with strangers, with the nipping instinct of a heeler.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and a job; it is not suited to town life without one. Training should start early and stay consistent. The short double coat needs little.
