Affenpinscher

The Affenpinscher is a small German terrier-type dog with a shaggy, harsh coat and a blunt, whiskered face — the name means "monkey terrier", and it is not unkind.

History

It was bred in Germany from the seventeenth century as a ratter, working stables, kitchens and shops, and was gradually reduced in size into a companion. The wiry coat and the beard were working equipment before they were charm.

Temperament

The breed is known for being bold, busy and self-important — a small dog with a terrier's conviction that it is much larger. It is affectionate with its own people, entertaining to live with, and inclined to argue with dogs several times its size.

Care and training

Exercise needs are modest and met with walks and play, but the harsh coat wants regular brushing and periodic hand-stripping to keep its texture. Training works best short, varied and rewarded; a bored Affenpinscher invents its own agenda.

Health
