Sabueso Español
The Sabueso Español is Spain's native scent hound — a heavy-boned tracker worked alone rather than in a pack.
History
It is documented in Spanish hunting treatises from the fourteenth century and has been used for centuries on boar, deer and hare across northern Spain, particularly the Cantabrian region. Unlike most European hounds it is traditionally worked singly on a long lead, tracking rather than driving, which is a distinct discipline and shaped a slower, more deliberate dog.
Temperament
The breed is known for being calm, gentle and methodical, affectionate at home and utterly committed once it has a scent.
Care and training
It needs substantial exercise and secure ground; the nose wins over recall. The short coat is easy and the very long drop ears want routine checking.
Health
Generally robust, with ear infections the usual hound complaint. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
