Mackenzie River Husky

The Mackenzie River Husky is not one breed but a group of northern freighting dogs from the Mackenzie basin of north-western Canada.

History

The name covers the large sled dogs of the Mackenzie and Yukon river valleys, developed by Indigenous communities and later by traders and prospectors who needed animals that could haul heavy loads through deep snow and forest rather than sprint over open ice. It has never been standardised, and cynologists disagree about whether it constitutes a breed at all — which is worth stating rather than smoothing over.

Temperament

Accounts describe a powerful, willing and independent freighting dog, sociable in a team and bonded to its driver.

Care and training

It needs an enormous amount of exercise and hauling work, and serious containment. The heavy coat suits extreme cold.
