Vikhan

The Vikhan is a mountain herding and guarding dog of the Chitral and Gilgit valleys in the Karakoram.

History

It has worked with shepherds in the high valleys of northern Pakistan for centuries, moving and guarding goats and sheep on ground that runs to three thousand metres and above. It is a working landrace maintained by herding families rather than any registry, and documentation of it is thin — which is a statement about the record rather than about the dog.

Temperament

The breed is known for being hardy, alert and closely bonded to its household, watchful with strangers and self-reliant in the way mountain working dogs generally are.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise and space, and early socialising given the guarding streak. The thick coat suits high-altitude cold and sheds heavily.

Health

Generally very hardy from natural and working selection; nothing is documented as breed-specific. These are patterns for the landrace rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
