Calupoh

The Calupoh is a Mexican wolfdog created deliberately in the 1990s to resemble the wolf-dog of Mesoamerican iconography.

History

Mexican researchers at the Autonomous University of Mexico State began crossing grey wolves with dogs in 1998, aiming at an animal resembling the wolfdogs that appear in pre-Hispanic art and burial sites. Mexico's federal canine association recognised it in 1999. It is a recent, documented construction rather than a survival, which is the honest way to describe it.

Temperament

The breed is known for being reserved, alert and strongly pack-oriented, bonded to its own household and cautious with strangers — closer to a wolfdog in manner than to a domestic guardian.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise, company, secure containment and an owner who understands wolfdog behaviour. It is a poor fit for an ordinary household.
