Food names for pets, from Mochi to Pepper

Food and drink names people really register, each tagged with the dish or ingredient it names.

Food names for pets, from Mochi to Pepper

Food names are the fastest-growing habit in the registers and the easiest to get right: they are short, they end in vowels, and nobody has to ask you to spell them twice. Mochi, Miso, Pepper, Oreo — all of them near the top of the counts.

Each one names something

The tag records the dish or ingredient — Japanese rice cake for Mochi, fermented soybean paste for Miso — which is what separates a food name from a name that merely sounds edible.

Sweet and short

The shortest food names are the ones that survive being shouted.

Every count on this site is a tally of real registrations: pet licences and shelter intakes published as open data by New York, Seattle, Austin, Montgomery County, Cambridge, Zurich, Basel and three Australian councils. Popularity here is the average share a name holds across those registers, so a name common in a small city is not buried by one common in a large one. Nine of the eleven sources are North American, so read the ordering as naming in those places rather than worldwide.
