Briquet de Provence

The Briquet de Provence is a Provençal hunting dog, worked on hare and boar in the scrub of southern France.

History

Briquet is an old French word for a medium hound, and this one belongs to the south — the garrigue country of thorn, rock and aromatic scrub where a dog has to be compact and tough rather than fast. It is a regional type rather than an internationally recognised breed, and it is bred by Provençal hunters.

Temperament

The breed is known for being hardy, determined and sociable in company, friendly with its own people and committed on a line.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and secure ground. The coat is easy; the drop ears want routine checking.

Health

Generally robust from working selection, with ear infections the usual complaint. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
