Tang Dog

The Tang Dog — the Chinese Tugou — is the general village dog of rural China rather than a single breed.

History

Tugou means simply "native dog", and the name covers the free-ranging farm and village dogs found across China, which vary by region and have never been bred to a standard. Genetic work has repeatedly pointed to East Asian village dogs as among the oldest and most diverse dog populations, which makes them interesting for reasons that have nothing to do with pedigree.

Temperament

The type is known for being alert, adaptable and territorial, attached to a household that feeds it and reserved with everyone else, with the self-reliance of a dog that has largely raised itself.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise and secure boundaries, and settles into household life given patient socialising. Coats vary by region and are generally easy.

Health

Natural selection rather than a closed studbook has left it notably robust; nothing is documented as breed-specific because it is not a breed in that sense. These are notes on the population rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
