Styrian Coarse-haired Hound
The Styrian Coarse-Haired Hound is an Austrian mountain hound with a harsh wiry coat, bred for boar in rough alpine country.
History
Karl Peintinger, an Austrian industrialist, created it in the 1870s by crossing a Hanoverian Scenthound bitch with an Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound, and bred on from that pairing for the specific job of tracking wounded boar in the Styrian mountains. It was recognised in 1889 and remains a specialist working dog.
Temperament
The breed is known for being tough, self-reliant and steady, attached to its handler and unbothered by weather or terrain.
Care and training
It needs a great deal of exercise and real tracking work; it is not a household breed. The harsh coat needs brushing and occasional stripping.
Health
Generally robust from working selection; nothing is widely documented as breed-specific beyond the ear infections of a drop-eared hound. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
