Šarplaninac
The Šarplaninac is the flock guardian of the Šar mountains between North Macedonia and Kosovo — compact for a guardian, and formidably strong.
History
It has guarded sheep in the Šar range against wolves and bears for centuries and takes its name from them. Yugoslav authorities recognised it in 1939 and the army used it as a working dog; export was restricted for a period, which is part of why it stayed rare abroad.
Temperament
The breed is known for being calm, incorruptibly loyal and highly territorial, devoted to its flock and household and thoroughly unimpressed by strangers. It works on its own judgement.
Care and training
It needs space, genuinely secure boundaries, early socialising and an experienced owner. Exercise needs are moderate; the containment requirement is not. The dense coat sheds heavily.
Health
Generally very robust from hard working selection, with hip dysplasia among the known tendencies. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
