Montenegrin Mountain Hound

The Montenegrin Mountain Hound is a black-and-tan Balkan hound bred to work hare and fox in the mountains of Montenegro.

History

It belongs to the family of Balkan hounds and was known for most of its history as the Yugoslavian Mountain Hound, renamed after the country broke up — a case where the breed did not change and the map did. It is worked in small groups on steep karst ground.

Temperament

The breed is known for being lively, persistent and independent, affectionate with its own people and single-minded on a scent.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and secure ground. The dense black coat with tan markings is easy; the drop ears want routine checking.

Health

Generally robust from working selection, with ear infections the usual complaint. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
