Thai Bangkaew Dog

The Thai Bangkaew is a medium spitz from central Thailand, named for the village its founding line came from.

History

It comes from Bang Rakam district in Phitsanulok province, where tradition traces it to a temple at Bangkaew village and to dogs kept by its abbot. It has been a village guard dog for two centuries or more, and Thai and international recognition arrived only recently.

Temperament

The breed is known for being intelligent, devoted to its own household and firmly territorial, wary of strangers and inclined to guard without being asked.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise, secure boundaries and early socialising given the guarding instinct. The thick double coat needs regular brushing and suits heat poorly for its density.
