Tatra Shepherd Dog

The Tatra Shepherd Dog is Poland's white mountain guardian, working flocks in the Tatra range along the Slovak border.

History

It has guarded sheep in the Polish highlands for centuries, one of the family of white European flock guardians that runs from the Pyrenees through the Abruzzo to the Carpathians. Shepherds valued the white coat for the same reason as elsewhere: it distinguishes the dog from a wolf at distance.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, self-possessed and protective, gentle with its own household and children, watchful and deliberate with strangers rather than sharp.

Care and training

It needs space, secure boundaries and early socialising, and it is unsuited to a small garden. Exercise needs are steady rather than intense. The thick white coat sheds heavily.

Health
