Kaikadi

The Kaikadi is a small Indian hunting dog from Maharashtra, kept by the nomadic community it is named for.

History

The Kaikadi are a wandering people of Maharashtra who traditionally made baskets and moved between settlements, and their dogs went with them, killing vermin and hunting hare and small game. The breed is a landrace tied to a way of life rather than a registry, and as that life has settled the dog has become rare.

Temperament

The breed is known for being alert, quick and attached to its household, wary of strangers and possessed of a real prey drive for its size.

It needs regular exercise and secure boundaries. The short coat suits heat and needs nothing.
