Karakachan

The Karakachan is Bulgaria's flock guardian, named for the nomadic Karakachan shepherds who bred it.

History

The Karakachans were transhumant Balkan herders who moved flocks between summer and winter pasture, and their dogs guarded the sheep against wolves and bears along the way. When Bulgaria collectivised agriculture the nomadic life ended and the breed nearly went with it; Bulgarian conservation groups rebuilt it from the 1990s, partly as a tool for wolf conservation — a working guardian reduces livestock losses and so reduces the killing of wolves.

Temperament

The breed is known for being independent, courageous and strongly bonded to its flock, calm at rest and immediate about threats.

Care and training

It needs space, secure boundaries and early socialising, and it is unsuited to town life. The thick coat sheds heavily.
