Sinhala Hound
The Sinhala Hound is Sri Lanka's native village dog, and genetic work places it among the older dog populations of South Asia.
History
It has lived alongside Sri Lankan communities for thousands of years — remains associated with early settlement on the island match the type — and it remains the common free-ranging dog there. Sri Lankan advocates argue for it to be recognised and adopted rather than treated as a stray, and it has been used as a working dog by local forces.
Temperament
The breed is known for being alert, hardy and adaptable, reserved with strangers and loyal to a household that earns it, with the self-reliance of a landrace.
Care and training
It needs regular exercise and secure boundaries, and it settles into household life well when socialised. The short coat suits heat and needs nothing.
Health
Natural selection rather than a closed studbook has left it notably robust; nothing is widely documented as breed-specific. These are patterns for the landrace rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
