Chiens

Jonangi

The Jonangi is an Indian duck-herding dog from coastal Andhra Pradesh, and it is nearly unique in that job.

History

Fishing and duck-farming communities along the Kolleru lake and the Andhra coast bred it to herd ducks — a specialisation almost no other breed has — and to hunt vermin around the ponds. Mechanised farming and the decline of traditional duck-rearing nearly ended it, and Indian enthusiasts have worked to keep it going. It digs burrows to shelter from heat, which its keepers treat as normal behaviour.

Temperament

The breed is known for being intelligent, independent and strongly bonded to one person, wary of strangers, and notably quiet — it rarely barks, producing a yodel instead.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise and secure boundaries, since it digs. The short coat suits heat and needs nothing. Training needs patience with an independent dog.

Health

Generally very hardy; nothing is widely documented as breed-specific. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
