Westphalian Dachsbracke

The Westphalian Dachsbracke is a short-legged German hound — the dog the Swedish Drever was built from.

History

It comes from Westphalia, where German hunters bred the regional bracke down to dachshund-like proportions for slow driving of hare and fox. Dogs exported to Sweden in the early twentieth century became the Drever, which is now far more numerous than its parent. The Westphalian remains a German hunting dog in small numbers.

Temperament

The breed is known for being friendly, lively and persistent, sociable with people and dogs and enthusiastic on a trail.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise and secure ground. Weight control matters on a long back. The short coat is easy.

Health

Generally robust, with disc problems from the build and ear infections among the known concerns. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
