Polish Hound

The Polish Hound — Ogar Polski — is Poland's heavy-boned scent hound, rebuilt after the Second World War from very little.

History

It is described in Polish hunting literature from the seventeenth century and was the standard hound of the Polish nobility. The war and the collapse of the estates that kept it left almost nothing, and Polish breeders reconstructed it from the 1950s. It is worked slowly on boar and deer, tracking rather than racing.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, gentle and even-tempered at home, and methodical and tireless in the field, with a deep resonant voice.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and secure ground. The short coat is easy and the long drop ears want routine checking.

Health

Generally robust, with ear infections and bloat given the deep chest among the known concerns. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
